Satya Nadella has run Microsoft since February 2014, when the company named him its third chief executive after Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Born in Hyderabad, India, he joined the Redmond, Washington, software maker in 1992 and spent more than two decades inside it before taking the top job. He now holds the titles of chairman and chief executive officer.

Nadella has no documented tie to Oregon. He lives with his family in Bellevue, Washington, in the same Pacific Northwest region as the North Coast, and Microsoft’s headquarters sit a few hours’ drive north of the Columbia River.

From Hyderabad to Wisconsin

Satya Narayana Nadella was born on Aug. 19, 1967. His father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar, was an officer in the Indian Administrative Service. His mother, Prabhavati, was a Sanskrit lecturer. He attended Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka in 1988.

He then moved to the United States and completed a master’s degree in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1990. After a stint on the technology staff at Sun Microsystems, he joined Microsoft. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1997. Microsoft’s own biography notes that he serves on the University of Chicago’s board of trustees.

He married Anupama Priyadarshini in 1992. She had been a student of architecture at Manipal. The couple has three children. Their son Zain, who was legally blind and had cerebral palsy, died in February 2022 at age 26. Nadella has said that being Zain’s father was a turning point in his life. His 2017 book is Hit Refresh, and he said its profits would go to Microsoft Philanthropies and nonprofit groups.

Climbing through Microsoft

Over his first two decades at Microsoft, Nadella moved through several divisions. He led research and development for the Online Services Division and served as a vice president in the Microsoft Business Division. He later became president of the Server and Tools Business, and before his promotion to CEO he was executive vice president of the Cloud and Enterprise group, where he led the shift to cloud infrastructure and services.

Wikipedia reports that revenue from cloud services under his watch grew to $20.3 billion by June 2013, up from $16.6 billion when he took over the division in 2011. When Microsoft announced on Feb. 4, 2014, that Ballmer’s successor would be Nadella, he took over a company he had helped steer toward cloud computing and its Azure platform.

Deals and a new chair

As CEO, Nadella has presided over large acquisitions. His first was Mojang, the Swedish studio behind Minecraft, for about $2.5 billion. The company also bought the app-development firm Xamarin. In 2016 it acquired the professional network LinkedIn for $26.2 billion, and in 2018 it announced a $7.5 billion purchase of the software-hosting platform GitHub. The acquisition of Activision Blizzard also appears on the list of deals during his tenure.

Microsoft’s stock rose nearly tenfold between his appointment and November 2023, according to Wikipedia’s account of his tenure. In 2021 the board named him chairman, succeeding John W. Thompson; the announcement came on June 16, 2021.

Honors and outside interests

Nadella has collected a long list of recognitions. They include the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman from the Indian government in 2015, a place on Time magazine’s 100 list in 2018 and again in 2024, and the title of Financial Times Person of the Year and Fortune Businessperson of the Year in 2019. India awarded him the Padma Bhushan, its third-highest civilian honor, in 2022. Georgia Tech gave him an honorary doctorate in January 2024.

Away from the office, he is part of the ownership group of the Seattle Sounders FC soccer club and of the group that bought the Seattle Orcas, a Major League Cricket franchise that began play in 2023.
