Former Jewell School Board Member pays for own recall

Recalled Jewell school board member Ann Samuelson paid the costs of the recall challenge that took her seat on the board away from her. “I don’t think it’s fair that this recall be paid ffor by the Jewell School District out of funds meant for the kids. I said I would pay for the recall and I did.” Samuelson said she won’t be taking a back seat when it comes to helping the children of Jewell. She was unanimously reappointed to the regional Northwest ESD board shortly after the Jewell recall took place. “I intend to continue helping our kids get the best education possible, that has always been my priority and will continue to be my priority.”

George Finch, Coordinator of Professional Practices with Oregon’s Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC), stated on July 16, 2008, that the Commission had sent notices of opportunity for hearing to both John and Laura Seeley. Finch stated that, “To date the we have not received requests for hearings from either, but there is still time within which they may request a hearing.” On May 16, 2008 the Commission considered reports regarding John and Laura Seeley. The Commission voted to charge both with violations of standards after they were indicted by the Clatsop County District Attorney for child abuse. The charges against Laura Seeley were dropped on the condition that John Seeley take part in a plea bargain. Seeley is currently on probation for a charge of Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree involving his adopted daughter. If he completes the probation the charge will be dismissed.
Samuelson played a lead part in bringing about Seeley’s dismissal as Superintendent-Principle of the small rural school district and was a target of anger by people who had written letters of support for Seeley when he was first arrested.

Thanks for all you have done for our children. I know you have made every effort to help all the kids!
This recall was not about what you have done or not done on the school board but was about votes you have made as a County Commissioner.
Keep up the good work!

I’ve known Ann for alot of years, she’d stand up for a child that was being abused any day no matter what, even if she was the only one to do so. I’m proud to know her, this recall was foolish, awesome that she paid for the recall, probably nobody else has ever done that. She is generous in spirit and community....

Heard that Mrs. Seeley will be teaching 5th grade this year at Jewell, commuting from washington, if Samuelson was on that school board that would not be happening, she would stand up for the child that was brave enough to say no more, unreal what the some of the folks in Jewell choose to believe in.
